Flux Factory Annual Auction: December 4, 2018
December 4, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm UTC-5
Flux Factory’s annual Art Auction is our most important fundraiser of the year, and it’s always a wonderful time to gather with friends from far and wide. This year we are honored to once again partner with Long Island City Artists to host the event at the beautiful PLaxall / LICA Gallery. Each year we auction work by approximately 70 artists, including many Flux Artists-in-Residence as well as luminaries from our broader community such as such as Swoon, Duke Riley, Mark Dion, and more. The silent auction would not be complete without catering and an open bar, with sideshows, performances and more! This year we are happy to announce that Kreung Cambodia will be catering, with beer provided by Arrowood Farms, wine and cocktails will also be available. This benefit supports Flux Factory’s ability to provide over 75 artists in 2019 with stipends to produce art exhibited at Flux’s free public events.
Guests of Honor: Melinda Katz, Queens Borough President and NYC REIC (New York City Real Estate Investment Cooperative) Image description: Two photos side by side. The first photo shows Melinda Katz, Queens Borough President standing at a glass podium speaking to a crowd. She is a woman with blond hair to her shoulders. She is holding a microphone with one hand and gesturing with her other hand. There are people sitting behind her. The second image shows the screen of a laptop sitting on an table, behind the computer is a crowded meeting hall. On the screen of the computer is the text “We can pool our money to invest in buildings and land for local, cultural and cooperative uses.” The NYC Real Estate Investment Cooperative (NYC REIC) is a not-for-profit corporation working to secure permanently affordable space for civic, cultural, and cooperative use in NYC. They believe that the people who live and work in New York City should be able to create the city we want together and that permanently affordable work space is at the heart of economic justice, cooperative power, and neighborhood resilience. REIC has laid the groundwork to establish Community Land Trusts so that large groups of citizens can pool small-scale investments to keep beloved local businesses in place and thriving. This will allow community members to divest from big banks and invest in their own neighborhoods and their own destinies.
The 19th Queens Borough President, Melinda Katz has been a dedicated public servant for nearly 20 years, serving in the City Council, in Community Boards, in the State Assembly and more. A Forest Hills native and part of a family of artists, Melinda has performed publicly as a singer on numerous occasions. Melinda and Flux both care deeply about providing affordable space, and so Flux is awed by Melinda’s recent creation of over 15,000 units of affordable housing in Jamaica Queens, as well as her other recent initiatives such as creating thousands of new seats and capacity for public schools, and programs for non-violent criminal convictions to be expunged.
