LAST FLUX WEDNESDAY (For now)

Anne Marie Beck and Will Owen (with collaborators) will be creating a sound meditation with the intent of creating space for more open perception. The experience will last approximately 30 minutes.

Christine Laquet will show her 22 minute film Geometric sprawl (2019) looping in the cinema. The music has been performed by Sofus Forsberg, at the Decipher Performance Festival at Institut for X. The scenery of the film is uninhabitable and inhospitable to humans. Yet those humans continue to explore, survey, construct, or colonize, to survive. Like a forewarning of what might happen next, the main question arises: how to habitate, considering the changes to come, because of global warming? In a space between documentary and fiction, the film is made up of sequences next to each in a raw style. During a performance, Sofus Forsberg has been improvising music on the film, that largely influenced the final editing process of the film. The film is currently also a part of Christine’s exhibition 2019,OK at Spanien19C.

Illesha Khandelwal is an interdisciplinary artist from Mumbai. She works with landscapes, finding the places of the heart. Her work suggests a psychology of geography – an unfixed landscape that you alter by your very existence. This Flux Wednesday you can experience an installation about the landscape of Aarhus featuring seagulls.

We will screen a short film by Marta Masternak in the atelier, titled Human rituals (2019). Human rituals, are a feature of all known human societies, from grand coronation ceremonies to a simple handshake. These rituals are often so deeply ingrained into societal norms that we integrate them into our everyday behaviours without any conscious knowledge or recognition of them.

Camilla Bonde Bech is a returning friend of Flux Factory, and often visits Flux at the residency at ARoS Public. This Flux Wednesday, Camilla will be presenting one of her experimental film animations in the Atelier.

We will unfortunately not be able to show the feature film A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness, or the teaser for Wild Darlings Sing The Blues by Flux Factory artist Nova Scott-James, as announced in our last newsletter. However, we will make it up to you by inviting you to sing karaoke (either terribly or well), showing off our killer dance moves and offering presentations by various Artists-in-Residence. Join us for an informal evening of art, play, karaoke, dancing, and a glass or two of wine.

A display of Mail Art: Alternate Economies and Memes & Zines is also still available to explore in the Atelier, so if you haven’t had a chance to catch it, now is your chance!

Opening reception: 2019, OK

The title 2019, OK refers to the “city killer” asteroid that hurtled past Earth last July at an uncomfortably close proximity. Being in contact with meteorites is one aspect of Christine Laquet’s research. Thanks to a loan from the Copenhagen Natural History Museum, a sample of the Aarhus Meteorite will be shown in a new context; on the 5th of Oct., Laquet will propose a collective walking performance at 11am to share a celebration: the 68 years old of the anniversary of its fall on Earth.

Alternative Economies is an exhibition of art sent through the mail, in response to the open call for proclamations and manifestations that address healthy survival mechanisms, positive strategies and a tacit means of protest within the stresses of capitalism. As the call stated, “One can participate in the alternative economy in many different ways, according to their taste.” With contributions from, Brasil, USA, Austria, England, Italia, España and Switzerland.

MEMES & ZINES
Zines created by Danish students under the Guidance of Cayla Lockwood

Memes & Zines was a workshop given by Cayla Lockwood to a group of Danish students who visited the ARoS Museum. Dadaist poetry met lol-cats, as students used randomly generated text and google images, along side good old-fashioned scissors and glue, to cut-and-paste their own In-Real-Life (IRL) meme. After a short demonstration on making simple saddle-stitched zines, the group compiled the IRL Memes into book form. Copies of the book will be displayed along side zines made and collected by Abdul Dube.

Spatial Subversions

Sholeh Asgary: Sound Performance 
Sholeh Asgary is a multidisciplinary artist, electro-acoustic composer and extended vocalist. Her sound performances make use of repetitive actions, improvisation, and objects that relate to the histories she works with, creating ritualized feedback loops. Her performances have been likened to an alchemy with sounds or even cooking–an image of the world through the physical aural realm.

JeviJoe Vitug + Maureen Catbagan: A x A Tactical Museum
A x A Tactical Museum is a collaboration between the Abang-guard and ARoS museum guards as a way to highlight the labor body within art institutions while subverting the current militaristic climate. Ramping up Marcel Duchamp’s La Boîte-en-valise portable museum, Abang-guard duo Jevijoe Vitug and Maureen Catbagan will be performing as guards while wearing tactical vests containing videos and art works by museum guards at ARoS.

Kalon Hayward: Transform- nation Meditation
Kalon is a multidisciplinary artist. He combines music, African dance, and theatre to explore spirituality and sexuality with a cosmic perspective.

Flux Wednesday presentations by Heather Kapplow, Springboard Collective (Danny Crump & Sarah Dahlinger) Marta Masternak and Verena Meyer

Please bring an object with you that is either luxurious to you, or which symbolizes luxury for you.

Heather Kapplow will present an ongoing project about LUXURY, what it is, why we need it, and what the possibilities are for feeling a sense of luxury in our lives that isn’t tied to spending money/exploiting natural resources or other people. Kapplow is gathering data via an online survey and by doing interviews in different cities in the US, EU and beyond. Kapplow will interview participants and take a photograph of their objects, and this data will be used to shape unique sculptural objects/experiences occurring in Bilbao (Spain) at the end of 2019 that are luxurious but have no monetary value.

Danny Crump and Sarah Dahlinger co-direct Springboard Collective, a collaboration that produces collectively authored social sculptures and immersive installations. They will discuss their collaborative process and present recent projects.

Marta Masternak is a Berlin-based filmmaker who will screen 2 new collage films with music by permanenterror. “Cizsa (Silence)” addresses the relationship between time, memory, and how we perceive the subjective reality of it; which we base our everyday thoughts and experiences on. “Human Rituals” investigates acts that though often very simplistic in expression, can be extremely effective and ubiquitous in all known human societies, from grand coronation ceremonies to a simple handshake.

Verena Meyer will give an interactive performance.

Experimental Notations
Join Kosmologym and Martha Skou for an evening of performances based on experimental musical notation systems. Kosmologym will present Tasty Score from 18:30-19:20. Tasty Score is a human driven drum machine that turns recipes into songs and was originally created for the Art Prospect festival in Saint Petersburg, RF. The game translates recipes from “The Book for Tasty and Healthy Food”.

Martha Skou will perform Core-Core #03 at 19:30. She will be accompanied by two Danish musicians Jonas Stampe (sitar) and Marius Paschke (percussion). Core-Core #03 encourages risk-taking, spontaneity and playfulness and centers around Skou’s exploration of creating image and sound simultaneously, while examining intuitive methods for improvised collaborations across genres. Beyond vocal technique, Skou often uses effects to build up layers of sound. Shaping the voice while drawing and moving intuitively in space.

Kosmologym is an art and game design collective. Our games challenge players to encounter others (human/animal, plant, mineral, institution) and place human bodies in physical relationships to global systems.

Martha Skou is a Danish-born artist based in New York City. Martha moves freely between audible and visual worlds through abstract and atmospheric languages that manifest in both spatial and two-dimensional forms. Her collaborative and solo projects take place in intimate universes. Skou earned her master’s degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design while at the same time playing with her former band Betting On The Mouse. She has exhibited her work at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; Telfair Museums, Savannah; and Pioneer Works, New York, among others.

“Aleax’s Runn Off” by Lee Tusman and “PowerSuit Fashion Show” by Aliya Bonar
August 14th Lee Tusman presented “Alexa’s Run Off”. Tusman showed new works and a talk on embodied virtual poesis assistants. Tusman points out that: In the near future an alternative to the convenience and utility promised by corporate digital assistants Alexa, Cortana, Google Assistant emerges. New corporate teams bottle generative art systems within the black box of deep learning algorithms. AI has freed artists and their dealers from the need to exhaustively imagine and test novel, costly art installations. Instead powerful machines run millions of calculations to spawn new works for subscribers. Rival brands generate entirely virtual artists, negating the need to pay humans. Against this scene a hacker-art-collective infects the algorithms, attempting to establish….what?

Aliya Bonar’s presented her new line of PowerSuits made while in residence at ARoS. These garments are both ActionSuits — garments worn for taking bold new, impactful actions in your life and community — and also InActionSuits — garments worn while being indecisive and anxious about your life’s direction. The fashion show took place at the Atelier and traveled through the museum.

Independent curator Georgia Muenster organized a new iteration of her Going Places (Doing Stuff) tours — Aarhus Bike Edition!

The concept Going Places (Doing Stuff) was originally a part of Flux Factory’s three-year series of artist-led tours on buses – in which participants had no idea where the ride would lead. Georgia Muenster webpages described the concept as “an adventure as performance art…” furthermore that “the content of the tours is entirely up to the artist, and destinations are kept secret.”

While at ARoS Public in 2019, Georgia Muenster invited all the Fluxers on an Aarhus Edition of Going Places (Doing Stuff) via bike, with only Georgia knowing the destinations. The tour turned out to be amazing (as you can see in the pictures!). Biking around the City of Aarhus the tour took the Fluxers to the Botanic Garden, Museums Ovartaci, seeing a dinosaur footprint and at the ending a picnic in Trøjborg.

Skin Flora: Skin Painting

Our skin alone hosts a thousand species. Caitlin & Misha invited people to celebrate their bacterial symbiosis by getting characters inspired by common skin bacteria painted onto their hands or faces. The need for a diverse microbiome is for them a potent analogy for the need for cultural diversity among people. Sharing is caring!
